The sharing of great things that have enhanced one’s life (that can’t necessarily be digested in 5 seconds on a computer screen)
At first i was very dubious about Tumblr as to whether it could really go beyond momentary distraction/entertainment etc. I am pleased to say my doubts were groundless - I have without doubt discovered artists, films and musicians I now enjoy, very much in the real world, that I otherwise may not have were it not for Tumblr (alongside a great deal of absolutely worthless distraction).
That said, there are many things that do not really fit into the Tumblr short-attention-span-blog format, often the things that are most important and influential, namely whole books as opposed to quotes, whole films as opposed to silly gifs of quotable moments, whole albums as opposed to individual tracks, and of course real paintings as opposed to small digital jpegs.
So, in the name of trying to extend tumblr to help spread those things which in my opinion really have the power to alter one’s thoughts and future i suggest that we revert to the very simple and rather silly teenage idea of lists of one’s favourite things…
Top 5 films/books/albums etc, what one got from them, why one found them influential, why others should care, etc, etc, etc…
Tumblr is a network of people with their own histories, tastes, sentiments and ideals and that is something which massively surpasses the limitations of blog/reblog.
The written word is still unquestionably man’s greatest tool for the spread of “information” and things such as tumblr merely extend this tool. When things don’t fit into the tumblr format we can always resort to the word to encourage people to experience those things in the real world.
Let’s all start posting silly teenage lists of our favourite things that can’t be digested in 5 seconds on a computer screen.
